India Fuel Price Update: May 25, 2026

  • Petrol and diesel prices were increased for the fourth time in 10 days on May 25, 2026.
  • Today’s revision raised petrol prices by ₹2.61/litre and diesel prices by ₹2.71/litre.
  • Andhra Pradesh continues to report the highest petrol prices in the country at ₹117.88/litre.
  • Recent Assembly elections changed governments in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Delhi.
  • Diesel prices have crossed ₹100/litre in several states following the latest revision cycle.

Fuel prices across India continued their sharp upward movement on May 25, 2026, after state-run oil marketing companies implemented the fourth petrol and diesel price increase in 10 days. The latest revision increased petrol prices by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel prices by ₹2.71 per litre, taking cumulative hikes since May 15 to nearly ₹7.38 to ₹7.50 per litre.

The rapid price revisions come after global crude oil prices surged following tensions in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Brent crude prices have remained elevated for several sessions, increasing pressure on Indian oil retailers and import costs.

Retail fuel prices continue to vary sharply across states and Union Territories because of differences in Value Added Tax (VAT), local cesses, freight charges, and dealer commissions imposed by state governments.

May 19, 2026 ₹0.90 ₹0.95 Brent crude crossed $95/barrel
May 23, 2026 ₹0.87 ₹0.91 CNG prices also revised upward
May 25, 2026 ₹2.61 ₹2.71 Largest single-day jump in current cycle

Among the biggest political changes following the April and May 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP formed the government in West Bengal for the first time under Suvendu Adhikari, while the Congress-led UDF returned to power in Kerala under V. D. Satheesan. Tamil Nadu also witnessed a major political shift after actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam formed the government, ending decades of Dravidian party dominance.

The latest diesel hike has pushed diesel prices above ₹100 per litre in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Bihar, and Rajasthan. Economists warn that rising diesel prices could significantly increase transportation costs, logistics expenses, and food inflation in the coming weeks.

Analysts say the nearly ₹29 price gap between Port Blair and Amaravati is largely driven by state-level VAT differences. While some Union Territories maintain lower tax structures, several high-tax states continue imposing VAT rates above 30%, resulting in much higher retail fuel prices for consumers.
