Heavy monsoon rains have triggered one of the worst flood disasters in recent years across Assam, with the death toll rising to 62 and more than 7.05 lakh people affected across 12 districts. Eastern Assam has witnessed unprecedented flooding, particularly in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the devastation as the worst seen in around six decades. Rescue teams continue operations as hundreds of villages remain inundated and thousands of families stay in relief camps.
The 2026 monsoon has brought widespread destruction across Assam after continuous rainfall in the state and upstream catchments caused major rivers to overflow simultaneously. According to the latest figures from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have claimed 62 lives and affected around 7.05 lakh people across 12 districts.
Unlike previous years, eastern Assam has emerged as the epicentre of the disaster. Districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Lakhimpur have experienced extensive flooding, forcing thousands of residents to abandon their homes.
