HARARE – India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripted history by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s Twenty20 International cricket. The 15-year-old opener reached his maiden T20I fifty during the first T20I against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club, breaking multiple age-related records in international cricket.
Historic Knock in Harare
Chasing 126, Sooryavanshi walked in after the early dismissal of Abhishek Sharma and immediately took charge of the innings. The left-hander completed his half-century in just 18 balls before finishing with 50 from 19 deliveries, striking four boundaries and four sixes. He was dismissed on the very next ball after reaching the landmark.
At 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi became the youngest batter to score a T20I half-century, eclipsing Gibraltar’s Louis Bruce, who held the previous record after scoring a fifty at 16 years and 56 days.
Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Long-Standing Record
The innings also made Sooryavanshi the youngest player from a Full Member nation to register an international half-century. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 213 days old when he scored his maiden international fifty against Pakistan in 1989.
The latest achievement adds another chapter to the teenager’s remarkable rise, having already become one of the youngest cricketers to represent India at the international level.
India Dominate Zimbabwe in Series Opener
Earlier, India’s pace attack restricted Zimbabwe to 125 for 7 after captain Shreyas Iyer opted to field first. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav picked up two wickets each as the visitors kept Zimbabwe under pressure throughout the innings.
