A state tourism department cruise boat capsized in the Bargi Dam on the Narmada River near Jabalpur on the evening of April 30, 2026, leaving at least nine people dead and several others missing, according to officials. Rescue operations continued into May 1 as authorities searched for those still unaccounted for.
The vessel overturned approximately 300 meters from the shore after being caught in a sudden storm, with wind speeds reported between 60 and 70 kmph. Officials said strong gusts and rising waves destabilized the boat, leading to the accident.
Rescue teams comprising personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and the Indian Army have been deployed at the site. Authorities said between 15 and 22 passengers have been rescued so far, though the exact number remains under reconciliation.
Survivors and eyewitnesses have raised concerns about possible lapses in safety protocols. Several passengers alleged that life jackets were not distributed before departure and were handed out only after water began entering the vessel, leading to confusion and panic. These claims could not be independently verified at the time of publication.
Questions have also been raised about whether the cruise should have operated under prevailing weather conditions. Reports indicate that the India Meteorological Department had issued a yellow alert for the Jabalpur region, warning of strong winds. Authorities have not yet clarified whether the warning was formally communicated to operators or whether standard operating procedures were followed.
Eyewitnesses at the site stated that locals had attempted to signal the boat to return to the shore as weather conditions deteriorated. It remains unclear whether these warnings were observed or acted upon by the crew.
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the families of those who died in the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said a high-level inquiry has been ordered to examine the circumstances leading to the accident, including compliance with safety norms and operational decisions taken during adverse weather conditions.
As an immediate measure, the state government has suspended all cruise operations across Madhya Pradesh until further notice, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Chief Minister also stated that local residents who assisted in rescue efforts would be formally recognized for their role, with honors expected to be conferred on Independence Day.
Officials said search operations would continue until all missing passengers are accounted for. The final number of casualties and survivors is expected to be confirmed after the completion of rescue and recovery efforts.
