New Delhi: India has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the development will contribute to lasting peace in West Asia while ensuring the uninterrupted flow of global trade through one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
During an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal outlined India’s position on the ceasefire and reiterated the country’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
Delivering India’s official response, Jaiswal said:
“India has welcomed the ceasefire reached between the United States and Iran. New Delhi hopes that this will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia and unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. India welcomes all steps that lead to peace and stability and expresses hope that this development in West Asia will also encourage peace efforts in Ukraine.”
The statement underscores India’s support for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement while highlighting the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor through which a significant portion of global energy supplies and international trade pass.
Alongside India’s diplomatic position, the Ministry of External Affairs provided an update on the welfare of Indian nationals currently residing in Iran. Officials confirmed that a dedicated special control room remains fully operational to assist Indian citizens and their families.
Jaiswal noted that while the Indian Embassy had earlier issued advisories encouraging Indian nationals to leave Iran amid regional tensions, approximately 7,500 Indian citizens continue to remain in the country. The government stated that it remains closely engaged with the situation and stands ready to provide assistance when required.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also briefed the media on maritime operations and repatriation efforts. According to ministry officials, more than 700 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated from the region. This figure includes 63 Indian seafarers who were operating in particularly volatile areas of the Gulf.
Officials further confirmed that port operations across India continue to function normally, with no reports of congestion or disruption despite recent geopolitical developments in West Asia.
Representatives from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry and the Coal Ministry sought to reassure the public regarding domestic energy security and resource availability. Officials stated that supplies of LPG, petrol, diesel and coal remain stable across the country and that sufficient reserves are available to meet domestic demand.
The ministries emphasized that existing stockpiles and supply arrangements are adequate to prevent shortages or major market disruptions resulting from the brief conflict. Authorities also indicated that there is no immediate concern regarding fuel availability or coal supplies for power generation.
The inter-ministerial briefing reflected the government’s coordinated approach toward monitoring developments in West Asia, safeguarding Indian citizens overseas, ensuring the smooth functioning of maritime trade, and maintaining domestic energy security.
India reiterated its support for all efforts that promote peace, stability, secure navigation and the free flow of global commerce, while continuing to closely monitor developments across the region and their broader international implications.
